Banana Pumpkin Bread with Cinnamon Crumble

Around here, bananas are either gone in a day or nobody touches them. There does not seem to be much in-between. When they start getting too ripe, I would rather turn them into something good than let them go to waste. This banana pumpkin bread combines ripe banana, pumpkin puree, brown sugar, melted butter, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and ginger in one soft, easy batter.

The same batter can become one loaf, regular muffins, or mini muffins. We can leave it plain or add chocolate chips, nuts, cinnamon crumble, or chocolate chips and crumble together. It doubles easily when several ripe bananas need to be used, which makes it practical to keep some out and freeze the rest.

Why Banana and Pumpkin Work So Well Together

Very ripe banana brings sweetness, moisture, and the familiar banana flavor, while pumpkin adds a little more softness and a subtle fall flavor. Brown sugar gives the bread richness, and cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and ginger round everything out. The pumpkin flavor is subtle — you still taste the banana, while the pumpkin adds a little extra softness and warm fall flavor without taking over. It still feels familiar like banana bread, just warmer and more fall-inspired.

How to Make Banana Pumpkin Bread

Mix the wet ingredients in one bowl and the dry ingredients in another. Pour the banana-pumpkin mixture into the dry ingredients and stir just until combined; do not overmix. Fold in chocolate chips or nuts if using, add the batter to a loaf pan or muffin pans, sprinkle on crumble if using, and bake according to the format you chose.

Ways to Make It

The basic banana pumpkin bread recipe is easy to change without adding anything beyond a few simple options.

  • Plain: Bake the batter as written without additions.
  • Chocolate Chip: Fold in 1/2 cup mini chocolate chips.
  • Banana Nut: Fold in 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts.
  • Chocolate Chip + Nut: Use 1/3 cup mini chocolate chips plus 1/3 cup chopped nuts.
  • Cinnamon Crumble: Leave the batter plain and add the cinnamon crumble before baking.
  • Chocolate Chip + Crumble: Fold mini chocolate chips into the batter and add crumble over the top.

Cinnamon Crumble Topping

Mix 1/2 cup all-purpose flour, 1/2 cup packed brown sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and a pinch of salt. Stir in 4 tablespoons melted butter with a fork until coarse crumbs form. For chunkier crumble, refrigerate it for about 20 minutes before adding it to the batter. That is what I did with the photographed loaf and crumble muffins.

Make It as a Loaf or Muffins

For a loaf, use a 9x5-inch loaf pan and bake at 350°F on regular Bake for approximately 55–70 minutes, beginning to check around 50–55 minutes. If the crumble or top becomes too brown before the center is finished, loosely tent it with foil. For regular muffins, fill the cups about 3/4 full and bake at 350°F on regular Bake for approximately 18–22 minutes, or at 325°F on Convection or Pure Convection for approximately 18–20 minutes. For mini muffins, fill the cups about 3/4 full and bake at 350°F on regular Bake for approximately 12–16 minutes, or at 325°F on Convection or Pure Convection for approximately 15 minutes. In my actual bake, the mini muffins took about 15 minutes and the regular muffins took about 20 minutes. Muffins are done when the tops spring back lightly and a toothpick comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs.

Easy to Double

Sometimes the kids eat all the bananas almost immediately, and sometimes they suddenly stop touching them. When several bananas reach the overripe stage at once, this recipe is easy to double. A larger batch lets us make a mix of loaves, regular muffins, and mini muffins, then keep some out to eat and freeze the rest.

Tips for the Best Banana Pumpkin Bread

A few simple things help the loaf and muffins bake evenly without making the method complicated.

  • Use very ripe bananas.
  • Mix the wet and dry ingredients separately first.
  • Stir just until combined, and do not overmix.
  • Begin checking the loaf early because ovens vary.
  • Tent the loaf loosely with foil if the crumble browns too quickly.
  • Refrigerate the crumble about 20 minutes if you want chunkier crumbs.
  • Cool the loaf about 15 minutes before removing it from the pan.
  • Cool bread and muffins completely before freezing.

How to Freeze Banana Pumpkin Bread and Muffins

Allow the bread or muffins to cool completely. For bread, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and then foil, or place it in a freezer bag. Put muffins in a freezer-safe bag or container. Freeze either one for up to 3 months, then thaw at room temperature or overnight in the refrigerator. This is one reason I like making a larger batch when we have several ripe bananas waiting on the counter.

See everything we actually use

This is exactly the kind of recipe I like for using what we already have. The banana still comes through, the pumpkin gives it a subtle fall flavor, and the same batter can become a loaf or a whole batch of muffins depending on what we need. Find more in Easy Family Recipes.
